Lancashire Teaching Hospitals celebrates major milestone in GMC National Training Survey 2025

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has achieved a remarkable leap forward in its 2025 GMC National Training Survey results, establishing the Trust as one of the best places to train and work for resident doctors.

They have reported a much more positive training environment this year, with overall satisfaction rising by 5.83% to 78.56%, surpassing both regional and national averages for the first time in more than four years.

The Trust recorded improvements in 17 out of 18 key themes compared to 2024, with standout progress in Feedback (+7.90%) and Adequate Experience (+5.09%). Impressively, there were no negative (red) outliers at Trust level this year, a clear indication of consistent, high quality training across departments.

9 of the 18 survey themes now score above the national average, with Workload—traditionally a challenging area—improving to exceed the national benchmark. The results are further reinforced by a strong 83.29% response rate (302 respondents), ensuring a reliable and representative picture of progress.

Among the top performing specialties were:
Palliative Medicine – achieving eight green outliers, making it one of the Trust’s best performing areas.
Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, and Internal Medicine Training (Stage One) – showing consistently strong outcomes.
Regional Teaching – recording the highest number of positive outliers across the Trust.

Enhanced monitoring and focused support have also driven a turnaround in several areas, including Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Neonatal Medicine, and Clinical Radiology, all showing notable improvements with fewer low scoring outliers than in 2024.

Reflecting on the success, Alison Sykes, Emergency Department Consultant, and Gerry Skailes, Chief Medical Officer, said:

“These results mark a significant milestone for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. The improvement in overall satisfaction and the strength of feedback from our resident doctors is a testament to the dedication and collaboration across our divisional teams.

To see our training experience exceed both regional and national benchmarks is incredibly encouraging. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every team involved, from education leads to frontline staff, for their commitment to creating a supportive, high quality learning environment.”

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals’ 2025 survey results highlight a powerful story of progress, partnership, and pride, setting a new benchmark for excellence in medical education and training.
