Why do I need an OpenAthens account?
An OpenAthens account will help you with
- accessing the latest evidence for patient care.
- CPD and revalidation.
- your research and education.
What can I access with an OpenAthens account?
With your OpenAthens account you will have access to the following resources:
- healthcare databases such as Medline, CINAHL & Embase
- 1000s of e-Journals
- 100s e-Books
- up to date tools such as DynaMed and BMJ Best Practice
- InterNurse,
- Oxford Medicine Online
- Royal Marsden Online.

How to sign up for an OpenAthens Account.
There is a short registration form to complete. . Watch the video below that takes you through the online registration process. There is also written instructions beneath the video.
Fill in the online registration form
- You register by going to the online registration form
- You will need to register from an NHS Device
- You will need to enter the following details
- Name
- Email. It helps if you use your Trust email.
- Organisation. Enter Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
- Work address
- Work telephone number.
- Job title
- Job role
- Whether you are permanent or temporary. You are temporary if you are going to be with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals for less than two years.
- You will need to accept the terms and conditions.
- Once you have filled in the form, click on the Register button.
Activate your account.
If you have clicked on the Register button, you will be told whether your registration has been successful. If you have registered using a Trust email you should receive your activation email. In the email will be your username and a link. If you have not registered using your Trust email, then you may need to wait until a member of the library staff activates your account. We check daily for non-activated accounts and so you should hear from us in one working day.
- Your username will look something like this – nhsjsmith001.
- You will need to click on the link in the email and set a password.
- Passwords are case sensitive.
- Passwords must be between 10- 100 characters.
- Passwords must contain a mixture of letters and non-letters.
- After setting your password your OpenAthens account is now active, and you should be able to access online resources.
